The Jacksonville State volleyball team went into the Ohio Valley Conference tournament with the top seed and came out with the championship hardware. The Gamecocks (24-4, 18-0 OVC), who also cleaned house for individual and team awards, swept the Southeast Missouri State University Redhawks (16-18, 8-8) in the championship game after taking care of the Morehead State (20-12, 10-6) in the semifinal round.
The Panthers of Georgia State deflated an early win streak by the Gamecocks on Nov. 25, when they handed coach Becky Geyer her first home loss of the seaons 78-67. "I think overall we played well," said Geyer. "We just had a little lapse in the second half that gave them easy buckets, which gave them some confidence, and they had a lot of easy transition points.
The Gamecocks took a rough loss on Saturday, Nov. 25, when they faced Atlantic-10 powerhouse UMASS, who handed them a 100-69. The Gamecocks (1-3) never saw a tie or lead during the game, but saw a lot of Minutemen (12-1) Gary Forbes, Stephane Lasme and Rashaun Freeman.
The Jacksonville State University rifle team shot a season high aggregate score of 4,677 to give them the outright victory of the Gamecock Invitational from Nov. 17-19. The Gamecocks shot an aggregate of 2,378 in Air Rifle, the highest score shot by an NCAA team this season.
