Named by Sporting News magazine as "Best College Pep Band in the Nation" it just shows that Hardcorps and Stovall have been doing a great job.
A large focus of Stovall's job this year has been on the Southerners' 50th Anniversary that took place this past weekend at the home football game against Samford.
"Everything with the reunion was really like a second job for all of us. There were so many people that worked extremely hard to make the whole thing possible, and I think it went better than any of us even expected," said Stovall.
With around 1,000 Southerners alumni representing around 30 states across the nation coming back to join the current Marching Southerners in the halftime show, it is impressive how smoothly everything ran.
"We held a practice on Friday night and everything came together so well. The first few songs we practiced were almost perfect. Our alumni really came back prepared, and it was everything we hoped for and more," said Stovall.
Since the beginning of this semester, the start of Stovall's days have been working toward and planning this reunion with replying to e-mails and setting up the festivities for the returning alumni. The remainder of the time he gets to participate in his favorite aspects of working in the music department: the ensembles.
The Marching Southerners practice five days a week while performing one, and the Chamber Winds practice three days with various performances throughout the semester. Hardcorps only practices one day a week but have multiple games to perform at during the winter months. Stovall is there for all of this. But don't bother rolling out the pity party for his hectic schedule just yet - he loves it.
"The band and everything it entails is really my niche. I found something that I am good at and that I love, so I have stuck with it," explained Stovall. And he has no plans to leave it anytime soon.
"It was the band that brought me here, and it is the band that has kept me here. I couldn't imagine being anywhere else," said Stovall. "It is really hard to explain, but there is just something really special about this organization."
