Debra Deering, a JSU library employee, is doing her part, and then some.
In just two years, she has sheltered five litters of puppies - for a total of 25 dogs - that were literally dropped off at her home.
"I feel so bad that there is nowhere for these animals to go," Deering said. "I don't want to become a shelter, but I just can't turn my back on them."
When Deering first moved to Cherokee County, she had only one dog, a Chihuahua named Ina. Since she began taking in dogs, she has added to her canine family with Tigger, Sambo, Maggie, Rascal, Fiesty and Pepper.
The recent addition of seven puppies is only temporary until she can find them homes.
"I am hoping to find them all good homes, because I just can't afford to have this many dogs," she said.
"Right now, there are four females and three males that still need a home. They are a mixed breed, but their mother is small, so I am pretty sure they will not be too big."
Of the other four litters Deering has housed, co-workers and friends have helped her place them. But now, that resource seems to be running dry and she needs help in finding them homes.
If anyone is interested in giving one of the puppies a home, Deering can be reached by e-mail at deering@jsu.edu or by phone at (256) 475-5104.
