Jack Johnson
Sleep Through the Static
The Jack is back. Johnson, the surfer/singer-songwriter from Hawaii, has returned for his fifth full-length album, Sleep Through The Static.
The same old Jack is what you need to expect. Nothing really all that new is found in Sleep. The laidback surfer attitude is still influential to the music.
The album is very mellow and can often give you images of waves crashing on the beach, especially on "Same Girl." It is an especially good album to wind down to at the end of the day.
The highlights include "If I Had Eyes," the soft and sweet "Angel," "Same Girl," "Go On," and "Enemy." Unfortunately, the rest of the album may really help you sleep through all the static. In some cases, it is almost too mellow for its own good.
The formula Johnson has used on Sleep doesn't seem like it has strayed too far from all his other music. While it has worked quite well and brought him much popularity, the formula has worked much better on previous albums. If you are looking for quintessential Jack Johnson, Sleep Through The Static doesn't disappoint.
They say that the sign of a good artist is that they continue to evolve. If this is true, Jack has got his work cut out for him on the next album. But, overall it's not bad.
