Students face long hikes or parking fees

It's a cold January afternoon. The campus is shrouded in a depressing tone of gray. Up above, dark clouds blot out the sun. A steady rain patters the ground. And somewhere in a dorm room, a student is deciding to skip class. Why? Because he has a green parking tag, and Stone Center is reserved for Silver tags.
JSU's new parking system has been a widely discussed subject since the beginning of the semester. Midterms have passed, and still people comment about the parking on campus.
According to President William Meehan, even before the new system, parking was "the most widely discussed issue on campus."
That statement seems to ring true even now. And public opinion seems to range from indifferent to negative. No one seems to think that the change was a good idea.
"I don't like it," says Greg Gammon, a junior and member of the Marching Southerners. "Since I live at the BCM, I can't get an on campus tag."
Gammon is not the only student who has fallen victim to the dreaded loophole. Art majors are feeling the brunt of the parking system. The closest commuter parking to the art building is the lot in front of Brewer hall. Anyone who knows the campus knows that it's a bit of a walk between that lot and the art center.
Rob McGibbony is one such student who finds himself in a hike to class. "As an art major," He says, "it's frustrating that I have to walk that far to get to most of my classes."
Gammon and McGibbony are not alone. Several more students spoke up, and the answers were similar.
"It was a good idea, but not very practical." says Felicia Williams, a junior. "It cost way too much, and they could b spending that money on something else, like the broken chairs in the psychology department."
Joe Whitmore, unveiled a few truths about the cost of the new parking system. According to Whitmore, the idea had been "in the works" since 2004. Whitmore says that the idea for a transit system came about in late 2004, so it has been debated for several years.

I think the transit system is GREAT!! Especially for those who dont have vehicles. I love riding the bus on rainy and freezing days where If I didnt have a car i would be walking(or skipping class) The transit system is a LIFE SAVER!! Those that have their own transportation should STOP complaining and be thankful that they have a way to class unlike others. (Continued…)

Have you tried printing it off the web site and carrying it with you. I asked a driver and he had no problem pointing me in the right direction and if you can't print it off at home you still have options of loading it on a flash drive to print from or just going to the library to print it. (Continued…)

I am a commuter. I am very displeased with the new parking layout. I walk to class three different places on campus, including the coliseum, and I pass 80 or 90 empty spaces on my way to class. (Continued…)

Do you really think JSU gives a damn about the students? It's going to take threats from the president himself before anything will be done.

If you have concerns/comments you should e-mail them to Joe Whitmore at whitmore@jsu.edu. If you have a major concern you could also try e-mailing Meehan at pres@jsu. (Continued…)

Doesn't this remind you of government controlled economics? Instead of letting the free market run it's course they control it and see what happened? There should be staff and student parking that's it. (Continued…)

Maybe I haven't had the right classes but how would a free market work for the parking lot? The stadium will start bringing an immediate return and will hopefully pay for itself in the long run. (Continued…)

I learned an interesting trick from one of my classmates in EPY 430. If you use your current parking ticket and place it under your windshield wiper blade before walking away you won't get another ticket. (Continued…)

My whole problem witht he Bus Transit is the PARKING. I think it was a great idea to put buses on campus for those students who do not drive, but why did they have to mess with the parking. (Continued…)

When I first applied to JSU, one of the positives that were explained to me was the great parking situation. There was plenty of parking, they told me. (Continued…)
