The SGA began collecting donations from students last week at the basketball game against Tennessee State and will continue collecting donations until February 28.
SGA President Bryant Whaley said the SGA is working with the Bursar's office to collect the donations, and the university will send a check to the American Red Cross.
"We've already collected $255 just from the basketball game," Whaley said. "Students can donate by finding the 'Help for Haiti' jugs we are passing around."
The Red Cross urges people to donate money by going to their website, redcross.org or by texting "HAITI" to 90999 to donate $10. They also advise those concerned not to donate individual household goods.
"The relief operation in Haiti is already the largest single-country personnel deployment in global Red Cross history," the Red Cross said in a press release on Monday.
"The number of emergency response teams in or en route to Haiti equals those that responded to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami-a disaster that spanned 14 countries."
Last Friday's "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon, broadcast in the United States and internationally, raised $58 million, which will be split evenly among seven charities: the American Red Cross, the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, Oxfam America, Partners in Health, UNICEF, the United Nations World Food Programme and the Yele Haiti Foundation.
