Trenton Marshall, of the Jacksonville State University basketball team, is no ordinary athlete. Marshall takes pride in developing strong work ethic, supporting his team, and living a life of leadership.
He is originally from Garyville, La. While growing up, Marshall played sports with his older brother, Richard. Though he first found an interest in baseball, Marshall soon became intrigued by basketball. He recalls waiting for the local basketball team to clear the court so he could shoot hoops after school. At the time, Marshall did not know that his after-school hobby would lead to many life opportunities.
Marshall first attended Jones Junior College in Ellisville, Miss. There he played one season under the head coaching of Kyle Roane. Marshall chose to transfer in order to keep playing for Roane when he moved to JSU in 2008.
Marshall can be considered a leader on and off the basketball court. He has specific goals for the team. "I think we should work on building good chemistry among the team" When asked about work ethic, Marshall said that it is important to "give 100 percent to everything, practice or game," said Marshall.
While JSU basketball is important to Marshall, his studies also take priority. As a junior at JSU, Marshall is majoring in Sociology. In his free time, Marshall finds himself playing "Call of Duty" on his PlayStation 3. After college, he plans to continue working to all together better himself. Getting married and having a family are also in his future plans, but Marshall's big dream is to one-day play in the NBA.
Marshall shares a jersey number with his role model, LeBron James, #23 of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Marshall looks up to James for his high scoring records, and for being a leader on the team. Marshall said, "LeBron James helps his team win. I try to do whatever it takes to help my team win, too."
Marshall's ultimate dream may very well become a reality. He has received many awards that honor his leadership and playing abilities. Earlier this week, Marshall was named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week. This is the fifth time he has been awarded with this recognition.
Marshall is part of a succeeding basketball team at Jacksonville State. They all deserve the encouraging support of JSU students and faculty so come out to the next home game on the Jan. 28, against Southeast Missouri State.
